The planning department of Sheffield Council has voted and plans are now approved for Factory 2050, a state of the art, £43m development that will ensure Sheffield city region continues to lead on the cutting edge of advanced manufacturing.
Three were honoured for international trade – Dismatec, Melett and Abbey Forged Products – and one for innovation – Roy Hatfield Ltd. This year a total of 162 awards have been handed out – 110 for international trade, 39 for innovation and 13 for sustainable development. It is launching an international trade and export strategy with the priority of supporting small and medium sized businesses.
The authority said that SMEs were the foundation of the local economy, contributing around half of the employment and turnover, and boosting exports was a “strong route” towards increased private sector growth.
When Anne Wilson joined Numill as a book-keeper in 2000, exports accounted for less than a fifth of the tool reclamation company’s business. A management buyout and a recession later, Anne has built international trade into half the business “and that proportion is likely to rise still further”, she says. Continue reading
