B&RCCI – Customs Commodity Codes and Customs Entries @ Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber
Sep 27 @ 9:00 am – 12:30 pm

The UK government is currently negotiating our Withdrawal Agreement for leaving the EU. Whilst hoping for a trade deal which will continue to allow us preferential access to the EU, they are preparing for the worst and issuing advice on what businesses need to do in case of a hard Brexit.

Amongst this advice, are some key elements that your shipping staff will need to understand in order to facilitate the efficient movement of your shipments (export or import) through Customs controls.

This workshop will present those key elements in a plain English format and provide clear guidance on what your business needs to do and how to do it. Delegates will leave the course with the knowledge and confidence to apply what they’ve learnt back at the office.

Suitable for those businesses who trade only with the EU, as well as for those exporting and importing to and from non-EU countries.

NB: Barnsley business rate payers may be able to access a free place on this course (one delegate per course, per company) and should contact the Chamber before booking to clarify eligibility. Please note that spaces are limited, and will work on a first come, first serve basis

Brexit Contingency Planning @ Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber
Oct 22 @ 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

We’re currently in the unenviable position of not knowing what’s going to happen on 31st October. However, the worst case scenario in terms of disruption to business would be a hard Brexit. Overnight, not only would our goods be embroiled in delays at newly established border posts, those delays would be made worse by shipments not having the right documentation.

We don’t have control over the Withdrawal Agreement, nor over traffic jams at borders but there are elements we can control: due diligence around what a hard Brexit will mean for our business and having the right paperwork in place for when our shipments (whether exports or imports) arrive at Customs posts, enabling them to pass through as quickly as possible.

Understandably, we would prefer not to spend time and money on plans that in the end may not be needed, however, even if a hard Brexit doesn’t transpire, by December 2020 some other trade deal will be in place that will still need mostly the same due diligence and paperwork. Why not end the uncertainly for your business and get it out of the way now?

The Chamber is offering a one-day, interactive workshop for business decision makers, aimed at clarifying the issues, uncovering areas of your business that may be impacted and discussing contingency plans available to you. At the end of the workshop, delegates will have a clear idea of which contingency plans to adopt for their own company, be they for a hard or soft Brexit – or indeed anything in between.

Agenda

  • EU – as we were, setting the context
  • Possible Brexit models available to us
  • Timeline
  • Significance of the Withdrawal Agreement & Transition Period
  • What would a Hard Brexit mean for your business?
    • we consider 10 key issues
  • World Trade Organisation rules explained
  • What contingency plans should you be considering and when?
  • The Irish question
  • Impact on cash flow & overheads
  • UK’s Withdrawal Agreement
    • The proposal
    • The Plan
    • The Devil’s in the detail
  • Beneficial Actions to take regardless of type of Brexit

Northern Powerhouse Premier Trade Mission to ASEAN
Oct 26 @ 8:00 am – Nov 2 @ 5:00 pm

About the mission

This is a trade mission to Thailand and Indonesia is targeted to businesses that are experienced in exporting and based in the Northern Powerhouse (NPH) region. The mission offers a great opportunity to explore new markets in education, infrastructure, transportation and services. The visit will coincide with activities ahead of the ASEAN Thailand 2019 to maximise opportunities for NPH businesses.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) includes 10 markets that bring together an area of the world with significant opportunities for UK businesses. By 2030, Southeast Asia’s economy is predicted to eclipse Japan’s and be the world’s 4th largest single market after the EU, US and China. Steady growth combined with investor-friendly government policies has attracted businesses keen to explore the vibrant new domestic markets. Currently, 17.6% of all ASEAN’s EU trade in goods and services is with the UK.

Trade Mission Markets

Thailand

Thailand offers exciting business opportunities to companies prepared to take a serious interest in this dynamic market. It is the second-largest economy in ASEAN accounting for 17% of ASEAN GDP estimated at $505bn. Thailand is also well placed to offer a gateway to both ASEAN and Asia-Pacific markets, particularly India and China, many of which offer great business potential. Over the years, Thailand has managed to transform its economy from one that was primarily agriculture-based to one of the most diverse in the region. As well as agriculture, major industries include food processing, cement, integrated circuits, automotive parts and assembly, petroleum products, textiles, footwear, toys, furniture, synthetic fibre, and tourism. The country has a well-developed infrastructure, a free-enterprise economy and generally pro-investment policies. The UK is one of the leading European investors in Thailand with UK companies operating across the Thai economy. The rewards for doing business in Thailand can be considerable, but it takes time to develop the necessary business relationships. The country’s economic growth has created openings for UK firms in infrastructure sectors including electrical power, telecommunications, and renewable energy.

Indonesia

A country of big numbers and big opportunities with 265 million inhabitants, it is the world’s fourth most populous country and the largest in Southeast Asia. Indonesia has over 17,000 islands, over 500 different languages and a middle class larger than the population of Malaysia or Australia. The largest economic sector in Indonesia is manufacturing and processing, which contributes around 24% of the GDP. Some major industries in this sector include transportation, food and beverages, machinery, chemicals, and textiles. Other significant sectors in Indonesia are agriculture, including forestry, plantation, farming and fishery, and the hospitality sector. Specific opportunities for British businesses in infrastructure projects such as ports, airports, rail as well as mining, life sciences, financial services, food and drink, education, oil and gas, power generation and renewable energies.
