Languages – a move forward for the UK

In business, in education, at home! As a bilingual I am delighted to see a U-turn (in the primary school sector only at this stage), to make Language teaching part of the National Curriculum from September 2014. Hopefully the reinstatement in secondary schools will follow!

The British Chambers of Commerce earlier this year highlighted that a shortfall in languages is preventing exports and is seen as a critical lack of skills. Sheffield alone speaks more than 120 different languages – see Languages Sheffield’s website for details!

Multi-linguism has to be seen as an asset especially when doing business internationally and we must capitalise on this language diversity.
